Banksy's iconic mural of the rat with a beret was saved from obliteration due to the City's anti graffiti ordinance. Movie director Brian Greif had to promise to not sell it in order to be authorized to dismantle the outside redwood slats of the Victorian Height District home. But a firestorm of discussion ensued that pitted discussions of public art for the people and the greedy money grubbing art collectors that want to own it all.
Its been of such interest that the article took up serious square footage on the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle in this morning's Sunday paper with a full page spread on the inside.

Mexican Art Master David Alfaro Siqueiros Mural "Mexico Today" Moved
In 1992 a move was afoot to move a famous mural by Mexican Master David Alfaro Siqueiros from the Palisades in Los Angeles to Santa Barbara, CA. It was a BIG deal and the final details were nothing short of an art conservation miracle. The story of the whole mural restoration project is so interesting that, if you like art, I am sure you will want to see the 30 minute professional video. I was part of the team of painting conservation experts responsible for the saving and moving of this rare mural by one of Mexico's most famous artists of the 20th century. Save Freeway Murals From The Taggers and Vandals
Today was crazy: I was on the 101 freeway in Los Angeles, standing on the shoulder of the road about 5 feet from the traffic under an underpass all day. Today was the first day of work of graffiti removal from Kent Twitchell's Jim Morphesis Monument. Here's what happened today in an interesting quick 1 minute video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BR0rpn8Z5cs

Kent Twitchell Finishes Restoration of The Biola Jesus Mural
I'm in Los Angeles (La Mirada) today putting the final varnish on Kent Twitchell's Biola Jesus mural. Kent, the original artist of the mural done in 1990, is in charge of the restoration. But he has brought me on as part of the effort to consult with him on conservation efforts/needs. Today, I'll also be shooting the final clips for the video I've made of the project. Stay tuned!
If you haven't seen the two previous short videos yet, of the analysis before the work and the video on consolidation and conservation efforts, go to www.fineartconservationlab.com/twitchell-biola-jesus-mural

Famous Mormon Mural by LA Ramsey Found and Saved
This painting of the Angel Moroni delivering of the plates of the Book of Mormon to Joseph Smith by Lewis A. Ramsey is one of the best know paintings in the LDS Church. Unknown and lost for decades, I was part of the rediscovery of this “long lost masterpiece." Go to the following link to see this video about the incredible story how it was saved from demolition, lost, rediscovered (smelly!), conserved and restored.

This short second video shows the treatments that seem to miraculously regenerate the whitened varnish. By also absorbing into those layers an adhesive, the original colors reappear in a startling way.
The work is performed by Scott M. Haskins, art conservator on the mural by Kent Twitchell at Biola University in La Mirada, California. See blog page dedicated to project at http://www.fineartconservationlab.com/twitchell-biola-jesus-mural/
